Installation of Catch Basin Inserts

The town of Putnam Valley known as the “Town of Lakes” has received a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for a Water Quality Improvement Project.  This funding is a result of the Clean Water/Clean Air bond act. 

The project consists of installing catch basin filters in basins draining into Lake Oscawana, Junior Pond, Lake Peekskill, Bryant Pond, Barger Pond and Roaring Brook Lake.  These filters will address water quality issues including phosphorus concentrations, petroleum, oil, litter, sediment and other pollutants.  These materials are retained by the filter and cannot flow into these water bodies.  Installation of thirty-one filters in total has begun in October 2007 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. 

The town is required by state mandate to comply under the guidelines of “Small” Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4).  Stormwater maintenance and illicit discharges are the intended target.  Each year the town must complete specified tasks.  Education and public awareness are key components so that our residents can help to protect our natural resources.
